"She" was designed for the Ulster Community College Campus. (see below for older post) The clay is a local cone 2, red and blue-gray, brought into my studio from Sylvia"s Androgyny House of Design, a majorly wonderful place to have your hair cut and styled. Her place is in New Paltz, New York , off of the rail trail and when she decided to expand and construct on her property, enormous mounds of clay were excavated and I took some to my studio in many pails. Some experiments later, I designed this work with this interesting clay in mind_cleaned out large rocks, but mostly it's straight from the ground. In the firing, top half of "plinth" first, there was lots of interesting cracking, where the clay couldn't make the stretch, but it stayed together anyway. Not so great firing the bottom half of the "plinth" which exploded gloriously, but irreparably. The figure survived the firing quite well. Here are the after and before photos.
